On March 13th, 1990, my younger brother Kenny was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of one. He was a fighter, and two and a half years into his battle with cancer, the Make-A-Wish Foundation granted him a wish. Kenny was obsessed with “101 Dalmatians,” and his dream was to go to Disney World; he loved everything, Disney.
The generosity of the Make-A-Wish Foundation was beyond anything we could have expected. Make-A-Wish sent my entire family, including my grandparents, to Florida for over a week. Everything was included: air tickets, accommodation, food, car rental, and admission tickets to all the parks. They arranged for onsite medical care in case it were needed. To ensure Kenny enjoyed every minute of his stay at the parks, he was granted special privileges that allowed him to skip all lines and stay on any ride as long as he liked. They arranged for him and many other children to have breakfast with all the Disney characters and take pictures with them. The joy and smiles it brought to Kenny, could never be replaced, and my family and I are forever grateful.
Shortly after our trip to Florida, Kenny took a turn for the worse. He spent seven months in the hospital before coming home for three days and losing his battle with cancer and passing away. He was just four-and-one-half years old. To this very day, my family and I are grateful for all the memories made possible through Kenny’s wish. The Make-A-Wish Foundation brings hope, strength, and joy back into the lives of families who have been devastated by a serious medical condition. One thing I admire the most about the Make-A-Wish Foundation is the generosity and kindness of its people. The organization truly cares about making a difference, a difference I Inspire to continue.
